A North Park newspaper distributor was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison Friday for the May 15 killing of his longtime friend and employer.
Superior Court Judge William Kennedy imposed the sentence on Ronald Rand Nichols, 26, who was convicted by a jury of second-degree murder in the multiple stabbing of Scott L. Tucker, 25.
Tucker, who had been friends with Nichols for about 10 years, was an independent newspaper distributor who contracted with the San Diego Union. He hired Nichols to help him on his route.
Tucker, who was engaged to be married to an Escondido woman who used to date Nichols, had his throat slashed and suffered 41 stab wounds.
He was found in a liquor store parking lot on El Cajon Boulevard in University Heights, his wallet next to the body, with Nichols draped across him. Nichols had stab wounds to both thighs and his left shoulder.
Nichols initially told police a third person had attacked Tucker but ran away when he intervened. Nichols was arrested after police found a knife wrapped in a bandanna on the roof of the liquor store.
