Local News in Brief : Pipe Bomb Damages Office of Principal in Simi; No Injuries

A pipe bomb attached to the window of a Simi Valley elementary school principal’s office exploded early Wednesday, blowing out a window but causing no injuries, Simi Valley police reported.
The bomb, described as a hand-made device detonated with a fuse, exploded between midnight and 7 a.m. at Berylwood Elementary School in the 2300 block of Heywood Street, Lt. Mark Layhew said.
A custodian discovered the damage shortly after arriving for work Wednesday morning. Damage was limited to the shattered 20-square-foot window and “pieces of shrapnel embedded in the walls,” Layhew said.
Principal Fred Bock said classes were not suspended and “besides a lot of mess in my office, everything is back to normal. It’s just a regular day for us.”
No suspects have been arrested in the bombing, although the explosion might be linked to a series of bomb threats at Simi Valley schools in recent weeks, Layhew said.
