Practice for the Indianapolis 500 got under way at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Mario Andretti registering the fastest speed among only 13 drivers who took laps on the 2 1/2-mile track.
It was the fewest drivers for an opening day of practice at Indianapolis since 1980, when just eight showed up.
Andretti recorded a speed of 210.329 m.p.h. Just minutes earlier, son Michael Andretti had taken the lead at 210.133 m.p.h.
Bobby Rahal was clocked at 209.399 and Johnny Rutherford at 207.996.
