A politically unpopular plan to increase university student fees by about 10% was removed from the proposed state budget by a two-house conference committee. The fee hike, which had been included in the Assembly version of the 1986-87 proposed budget, drew the opposition of Gov. George Deukmejian and Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco), who both vowed to block it. The increases--removed on a unanimous vote by the six-member committee--would have amounted to $117 at University of California campuses and $57 at California State University campuses. Current UC fees are $1,245; state university fees are $573.
