Herb Caen reports in his San Francisco Chronicle column that when the S.F. Actors Theater applied for rights to stage Clare Boothe Luce’s play “The Women,” the contract came back from NYC with a message from Mrs. Luce insisting that all 35 female roles must be played by females.
