70% of Chinese Men Smoke, Survey Shows

PEKING — Despite a campaign to publicize the ill effects of tobacco, 70% of Chinese men smoke, and the percentage is on the rise, the Workers Daily newspaper complained Sunday.
Citing a nationwide survey of 119,600 people conducted in 1984, the paper said that Chinese women smoke much less. Only 7% of women between the ages of 15 and 20 smoke, with the rate rising to 8.28% among women older than age 20, according to the survey.
Among men, officials showed the highest smoking rate.
