Snow Leaves Tasmania Capital ‘Giant Freezer’

SYDNEY, Australia — An Antarctic wind swept through southeastern Australia on Friday, blanketing roads and bridges with snow and turning the Tasmanian capital of Hobart into a “giant freezer,” a Weather Bureau official said.
Hobart airport was closed after the snowfall, which the official described as the heaviest in the island state since 1951..
Snowflakes, hail and sleet also hit Melbourne, which has not had snow since 1969.
