A U.S. Navy training airplane based in Concord crashed about 80 miles north of Reno, killing its pilot and co-pilot. Both men were dead when Navy investigators reached the scene of the crash, which occurred shortly after the airplane took off from the airport at the remote northern Nevada town of Empire. Navy spokeswoman Sandra Irwin said the airplane, a T-34B, was on a training mission at the time of the crash. A witness said the plane went into a dive shortly after takeoff and spiraled into the ground. The names of the two victims were withheld pending notification of their families.
