Vice President George Bush continues to hold a commanding lead for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination, with no strong challengers at this early date, the latest Gallup Poll found. The survey gave Bush 53% of the first- and second-place nomination votes of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Runners-up were Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (Kan.), 16%; former Sen. Howard H. Baker Jr., 12%, and former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr., 10%. Farther down the list were Rep. Jack Kemp (N.Y.) and Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, with 9% each, followed by Pat Robertson, TV evangelist, 8%.
