YO GOES ECLECTIC

“ONCE IN A BLUE MOON.” Yo. Deadbeat/Enigma. On its third release, this Berkeley-based band shows off an eclectic group of styles including post-punk, country-rock and folk, all leaning in a decidedly ‘60s direction. The unifying factor is Bruce Rayburn’s vocals, which have a nifty way of wrapping around a song in any style required. Rayburn and Co. pound out a punk-paced version of Cat Stevens’ “Hard-Headed Woman,” many songs of unrequited love and an Irish folk tale of unfulfillment, “The Hunt.” The album’s diversity doesn’t result in a disjointed hodgepodge--rather, the record succeeds because it’s so varied.
