Temperatures sank to record lows from the central Plains into the Northeast, as a strong high pressure system pulled chilly air out of Canada. Temperatures in at least 30 cities tied or broke records for the date as they reached the low 40s and 30s in South Dakota, New York, Illinois, Missouri, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Kansas. Records on the books since 1883 fell in Chicago, where it was 43 degrees, at Madison, Wis. (37), and at Moline, Ill., (38). Dubuque, Iowa, tied its record, set that year at 37. Pittsburgh’s low of 37 degrees was the coldest on Sept. 8 since 1870.
