In an effort to “turn up the heat” on the Federal Aviation Administration, Los Angeles County supervisors agreed to consider an ordinance prohibiting light planes from landing at the five county-owned airports, unless they are equipped with transponders and encoding altimeters--devices that allow air traffic controllers to see a plane’s position and altitude on a radar screen. The FAA does not require small, private airplanes to have either device. However, most do have transponders, and about half have altimeters.

The latest effort is coming from the L.A. County Board of Supervisors. They just announced a $3 million program in conjunction with some nonprofits groups to test and clean the soil at homes still standing in the areas impacted by the Eaton Fire.
