The policy commission of the Democratic National Committee issued a 71-page compendium of recommendations for the party, including commitments to “stronger” families, economic growth, “take-charge” trade policies and effective national defense. None are binding on Democratic candidates. Although the apparent effort to give the party a more centrist image will please some Democrats, it troubled a newly formed liberal group, Democratic Alternatives, which complained that the report made no reference to such national problems as discrimination and called it “unnecessarily timid.”
