Giants Gain Share of First Place With Fifth Straight Win, 35-3

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants finally got a good offensive performance to go with their dominating defense Sunday in a 35-3 rout of the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was the fifth straight victory for the Giants (5-1) and moved them into a tie for first place in the NFC East with Washington.

The Giants got good performances all around.

Phil Simms, who completed 20 of 29 for 214 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes and ran for his first touchdown in six years, linebacker Harry Carson caught the first touchdown pass in his 11-year career and All-Pro Lawrence Taylor led New York’s stingy defense.

It may have been Taylor’s best game this season. He had 7 tackles, 2 assists and 4 sacks.

The Giants held the Eagles’ offense to 117 yards and sacked Ron Jaworski and backup quarterback Randall Cunningham six times. Jaworski was 6 of 22 for 50 yards, while Cunningham was 3 of 6 for 48 yards.

Joe Morris, whose wife gave birth to a daughter on Saturday, gave New York a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard scoring run around right end early in the second quarter.

Paul McFadden cut the lead to 7-3 midway through the quarter with a 29-yard field goal, but Simms scrambled four yards for his first rushing touchdown since 1980 to give New York a 14-3 lead just before halftime.

Simms added scoring passes of 10 yards to Solomon Miller in the third quarter and 37 yards to Lee Rouson in the fourth quarter.

Carson caught a touchdown pass with 40 seconds left in the third quarter on a fake 30-yard field-goal attempt.

The seven-time All-Pro, who has scored two touchdowns on defense, lined up on the outside and caught a looping pass from holder Jeff Rutledge at the three and jogged into the end zone.
