NEW YORK — The stock market rose sharply in heavy trading today, propelled by hopes for lower interest rates and some favorable economic news.
The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials closed up 26.57 at 1,878.37.
New York Stock Exchange volume was about 194.22 million shares compared with 164.43 million shares Wednesday.
