S.D. Pitcher Guilty in Drug Case

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres pitcher LaMarr Hoyt, who won the American League’s Cy Young award in 1983, pleaded guilty today to misdemeanor drug charges.

Sentencing for Hoyt, 31, was scheduled for Dec. 16. He will spend at least 60 days in federal prison under the terms of a plea-bargain with federal prosecutors that was submitted to the federal court during a hearing today. Hoyt pleaded guilty to possession of Valium, a tranquilizer, and Propoxyphene, a painkiller. He was arrested Oct. 28 on suspicion of smuggling pills across the border by U.S. Customs Service agents at San Ysidro.
