Smokestack Climbers Protest Rhine Pollution

From Reuters

Five members of the environmental group Greenpeace climbed a smokestack of the Swiss chemical company Ciba-Geigy on Friday to protest pollution of the Rhine River.

A spokesman for the Swiss chapter of Greenpeace said the three Swiss and two Britons intend to remain on the smokestack until Christmas. Police said they planned to take no immediate action against them at the moment.

The protest came as environment ministers from nations on the Rhine gathered for a meeting to review the consequences of last month’s massive pollution of the river.
