BUENOS AIRES — Argentine President Raul Alfonsin today signed into law a 60-day deadline for filing any more charges of human rights offenses against the former military regime.
The measure, passed by Congress earlier this week, was proposed by Alfonsin as a means of reconciling the armed forces and civilians. After the deadline passes, all suspects not yet indicted will be sheltered from prosecution. The measure was angrily condemned by leftist politicians and human rights leaders, who have announced plans to challenge its constitutionality.
