1 Woman Dies in Fire, 1 Rescued

A bedridden 75-year-old woman was killed early today in a blaze at her Watts home, but a second elderly woman was rescued by firefighters, Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. Firefighters battered down an iron-bound door to reach the second woman at the duplex in the 1300 block of 109th Street, he said.

The dead woman was found in her bed, Wells said. The survivor was hospitalized suffering from smoke inhalation. Names of both women were being withheld until their families could be notified. The 3:50 a.m. fire caused about $25,000 damage to the duplex.
