Sammy Davis Jr. was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in Oakland on Sunday and expressed regret at the differences he has had in the past with the black community. “I never thought this day would ever come for me,” Davis, 61, said in a bittersweet 15-minute speech in accepting the honor at the annual Oscar Micheaux Awards ceremonies. “I’ve tried to do something with my life in the last 20 years,” Davis said. “I’ve got a bunch to make up for. I’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do.” Also inducted into the 1987 Hall of Fame at the three-hour ceremonies at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre were actress-dancer Jeni LeGon, Ernest Frederic Morrison and the late actor Benjamin (Scatman) Crothers.
