Layton Gets Life in Ryan Killing

SAN FRANCISCO — Larry Layton, a Peoples Temple member convicted of conspiracy in the 1978 killing of U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan in Guyana, was sentenced today to life in prison with possible parole in five years.
Ryan, a California Democrat, was shot to death along with four other people near the Peoples Temple jungle compound in Guyana. After his slaying, more than 900 members of the sect led by the Rev. Jim Jones died in a mass suicide.
