MOVIES - March 4, 1987

“The Theme,” a Soviet film about artistic turmoil and Jewish emigration that was released after a seven-year Kremlin ban, won the West Berlin International Film Festival’s Golden Bear award on Tuesday. It beat three American films in the competition: Oliver Stone’s “Platoon,” “ ‘Night, Mother” by Tom Moore and “Children of a Lesser God” by Randa Haines. Stone won for best direction. “The Theme,” directed by Gleb Panfilov, received its first Western showing during the 10-day festival.
