Shuttle Launch Pad Test Urged

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The shuttle program director has recommended a launch pad test firing of Discovery’s main engines before the next shuttle flight, which would delay next February’s blastoff up to six weeks, officials said today.
The action, which was anticipated since it already had been recommended by lower-level officials, still must be approved by Rear Adm. Richard Truly, the associate NASA administrator in charge of space flight, before the first post-Challenger shuttle launch is officially delayed.
