State Sen. John Doolittle (R-Citrus Heights) was fined $3,000 for violating state election laws during his successful 1984 campaign. The Fair Political Practices Commission’s action grew out of accusations that Doolittle and his staff failed to disclose that they had paid for a last-minute political mailer on behalf of Doolittle’s Democratic opponent, Jack Hornsby. The commission contended that the mailer was aimed at drawing votes from Sen. Ray Johnson, a political independent who was also running. Doolittle and Johnson, a former Republican, were thrown into the same Senate district race through a Democratic redistricting plan. A $3,000 fine was also imposed on Hornsby for not reporting the source of the financing for the mailer.
