Court Backs Delay in Ban on Mangoes

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court has upheld an Environmental Protection Agency decision to allow imports of mangoes treated with a cancer-causing pesticide until Sept. 30.
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, in an unsigned opinion issued Friday, said the EPA had adequately justified its decision to suspend a ban on imported mangoes treated with ethylene dibromide.
The chemical, known as EDB, has been found to cause cancer in humans. The substance is the only product available to rid imported mangoes of fruit flies, but foreign countries are expected to have an alternative ready this year.
