An Abstract Expressionist painting by Willem de Kooning was sold Monday for $3.6 million, a record for the work of a living artist, according to Sotheby’s. The price for “Pink Lady” also tied the highest price paid previously for a contemporary work at auction (a Jasper Johns work, “Out the Window,” also sold for that amount last year) and was the highest ever paid for the work of De Kooning, said a spokesman for the auction house. The identity of Monday’s buyer, who made the winning bid by telephone, was not immediately available, Weigman said.
