The Region - News from May 8, 1987

Under a barrage of pressure from restaurant and hotel owners, the Rancho Mirage City Council voted to amend a proposed no-smoking ordinance to permit some smoking in restaurants. The amended version would permit smoking in no more than a third of a restaurant’s seating area. Restaurants also would have to install air filtration systems by Dec. 31. The original proposal would have been the toughest anti-smoking law in the state. The proposed ordinance is scheduled for a second and final reading in as early as two weeks.
