Task Force Urges County to Create Council to Help Pregnant Teen-Agers

Hoping to curb one of the nation’s highest rates of teen-age pregnancy, a Los Angeles County task force urged creation this week of a council of experts devoted to helping pregnant youngsters.
Such a council would “provide adolescents with information, support and resources necessary to develop into . . . self-sufficient adults,” the final report by the Task Force on Teen-Age Pregnancy said.
The report cited statistics showing that 16,704 babies were born to teen-agers in the county in 1984, more than a third of the total births to teen-agers in California.
One in eight live births in the county is to a teen-age mother, two-thirds of whom will raise their youngsters alone and 80% of whom will never graduate from high school, the task force report found.
