ALS of Anaheim Is Purchased by MagneTek of L.A.

MagneTek Inc. of Los Angeles said that it has acquired ALS Corp., an Anaheim-based maker of shipboard power systems.

John Scherzi, vice president of marketing at MagneTek, said that ALS was purchased for a cash amount “in excess of $10 million.”

MagneTek, a maker of electrical products, which include lighting fixtures and motors, had $273 million in sales in fiscal 1986. MagneTek will incorporate ALS into the company’s Systems and Controls segment, Scherzi said.

Working within that segment, ALS, which Scherzi said turned a profit on $40 million in revenues last year, will provide various power sources for Navy ships.

“(ALS) has a premier relationship with the U.S. Navy,” he said. “It’s far beyond anything we have now.”

He added that those revenues should boost MagneTek’s sales to the military from the current 5% to about 10% of its total annual sales.

Scherzi said that ALS will “operate as it is now” and that no changes in personnel or location are anticipated by MagneTek.
