It’s the Great Sandy Way in Amman, Jordan, this week as a New York theater company brings a big-stage, Broadway-style musical production of the Arabian fable “Aladdin” to the Middle East. The 70-member troupe flew in nearly 9,000 pounds of sets, costumes and equipment to perform at the annual Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts, held 29 miles north of the Jordanian capital in the ruins of Jerash, which date back to the time of Alexander the Great. “The people here are going to say, ‘That doesn’t sound like our music.’ But it has the flavor,” said producer Patricia Snyder of the Empire State Institute for the Performing Arts in Albany, N. Y., which introduced the play this year.
