About 2,000 Dutch painters, sculptors and other artists will have to sell their own work or find other jobs, says the Netherlands’ Culture Ministry, which is abolishing a program that paid artists up to $16,000 for four pieces a year. The country’s Pictorial Arts Scheme fell victim last week to the private enterprise policies of the center-right government of Premier Ruud Lubbers. To replace the stipends, the government plans to use the program’s budget to commission public artworks, promote art exports and encourage the public to buy art.
