Anti-government protesters in Bangladesh clashed with riot police for the second day during a general strike to protest a new law giving the military seats on local councils. Witnesses said police wielding truncheons repeatedly charged nearly 500 protesters at a commercial center not far from the Parliament building in Dhaka, the capital, but no injuries were reported. Many shops in Dhaka were closed as workers honored the dawn-to-noon strike.
