Health services in New Delhi and other Indian cities were crippled as more than 8,000 government doctors went on strike to demand better salaries and benefits. The out-patient departments of most of the capital’s 10 major hospitals were closed down, and senior hospital staff members handled emergencies. The strike was called by a group of various medical organizations after it rejected the government’s latest wage offer. The government said it has recruited 1,000 doctors to fill in for the strikers.
