Great Western Financial posted a 5% increase in second-quarter earnings to $80 million. The gain was primarily attributable to continued strong loan volume and to further progress in the development of new sources of core earnings, including mortgage banking income. The Beverly Hills company also said it does not at present intend to write off its $49-million investment in the FSLIC secondary reserve.
