Discussions are under way to prevent the American producers of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Broadway production of “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” from closing the play on Sept. 6. Facing additional costs needed to recast the play with American actors under the terms of a union agreement, Bernard B. Jacobs, president of the Shubert Organization, told the New York Times that “Les Liaisons” would cost $210,000 to recast and an additional sum of as much as $200,000 to keep it running during its preview period. Jacobs said that despite critical acclaim and a strong showing at the box office, “Les Liaisons” is currently not doing well enough to justify the additional expense.
