San Diego Charger quarterback Dan Fouts has been excused from practice for a week and will be examined by a private doctor because of stiffness in his lower back.
Fouts, 36, had been complaining about discomfort and decided to see a doctor in Los Angeles after team physicians and trainers had given him a clean bill of health, said Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations.
