Fred Akers, the college football coach of Mossy Cade, says neither he nor the school are to blame for the player’s troubles.

Cade, who starred at the University of Texas before playing for the Green Bay Packers, was sentenced this week to two years in prison for sexually assaulting a Houston woman in his De Pere, Wis., home in November 1985.

At Cade’s sentencing, Judge Richard Greenwood had harsh words for the University of Texas and Akers, its former football coach. Greenwood said Cade was an athlete used by college football and that the system had failed him.

Akers, who now is the coach at Purdue, said society, not the Texas football program was to blame.
