While Robert Falce is to be commended for pointing out that Jack Mathews was erroneous in stating that Charles Chaplin had never won an Academy Award (Saturday Letters, July 18), I’d like to add that the Little Tramp was also awarded an Oscar in 1972 for his scoring of “Limelight.”

Chaplin was truly an auteur in every sense of the word, and one can only imagine what sort of impact he would have on today’s Hollywood, which relies so heavily on special effects. When today’s film makers realize that the story is more important than any other aspect of a quality film, then maybe we’ll all be treated to more magic moments like the last five minutes of “City Lights.”
