Suspect Misses Drug Talk but Gets Deputy’s Message

A Compton man was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale after he mistakenly offered some of it to a sheriff’s deputy arriving at a park to make an anti-drug speech, officials said Friday.
Eric K. Brown, 23, remained in jail on $1,000 bail after the Thursday incident when he was arrested by Deputy Sal Munoz at East Compton Park, 15116 Atlantic Ave., Deputy Willie Miller said.
Munoz, a deputy with the department’s substance abuse narcotics education program, was arriving at the park to give an anti-drug speech to a group of boys attending a basketball clinic when he was approached by Brown, Miller said.
Munoz, mistaking Brown for a parking lot attendant, smiled and expected him to point out where he should park, but was surprised when Brown offered him a $10 bag of marijuana, Miller said.
The deputy, who was out of uniform, quickly confiscated the five grams of marijuana and took Brown into custody before delivering the speech.
