Air Controllers in Spain Plan Strike

BARCELONA, Spain — Air traffic controllers voted Wednesday to go ahead with a 24-hour strike Saturday, threatening another weekend of snarled holiday air traffic.
A union spokesman for the 140 controllers at Barcelona’s El Prat airport, whose area covers a third of Spanish airspace, said the new walkout was called after aviation officials failed to set a timetable in a pay dispute.
The strike is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. local time Saturday. The spokesman said strikes may also be called Sept. 12 and 19 unless a settlement is reached.
A similar 24-hour walkout Aug. 22 caused a three-day snarl in charter flights and stranded tens of thousands of vacationers at northern Mediterranean resorts.
