Panel OKs Verity for Cabinet

United Press International

The Senate Commerce Committee brushed aside conservative opposition today and approved the nomination of former steel executive C. William Verity Jr. to be commerce secretary.

The 17-1 vote sent the nomination to the Senate floor where confirmation is expected in the next couple of days. Only Sen. Bob Kasten (R-Wis.) voted against Verity, 70, who would succeed Malcolm Baldrige, who died after being crushed by his horse in a July rodeo accident. Some conservative groups have lobbied against Verity because of his longtime support of increased trade with the Soviet Union.
