Baby Girl Pope Prayed for Dies Awaiting Transplant

ST. LOUIS — A 7 1/2-month-old girl who was mentioned in the prayers of Pope John Paul II during his visit to New Orleans died Wednesday at Barnes Hospital while awaiting a second liver transplant.
Mallory Smolinski of Valparaiso, Ind., had been the center of an intense search by doctors to locate a liver donor who was the same size as the child and had Type O negative blood.
