Former U.S. Rep. Howard W. Robison

WASHINGTON — Former Rep. Howard W. Robison, who represented New York in Congress for 17 years, has died of a heart ailment at age 71, it was reported this week.
Robison, first elected to the House in a 1958 special election from a district that included the area around Binghamton, Elmira and Ithaca, was dean of New York’s Republican delegation in the House when he retired in 1975.
He died Sept. 26 at his retirement home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., a Congressional source reported.
Robison was an early supporter of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, but later changed his mind. When he announced in 1974 he would not seek reelection to the House, he cited “disappointments in the Nixon Administration” as one of the reasons.
Robison served on the House Appropriations Committee and was the ranking Republican on its post office and general government subcommittee. Since his retirement from Congress, he had been vice president for congressional relations for the American Railroad Assn.
