Poland’s banned Solidarity trade union will use part of a $1-million U.S. grant to purchase American-made ambulances to help hard-pressed provincial health services, union activists said. A statement issued by a new working group said that Solidarity also will seek to establish specially equipped “diagnostic clinics,” independent of the state-run health service, for workers. The $1-million appropriation by Congress, the first official U.S. aid to Solidarity, stirred controversy in Poland, with the government labeling such union leaders as Lech Walesa “paid agents” of the Reagan Administration.
