In spite of unexpectedly fierce opposition, there will be a Jackie Gleason Park in Lauderhill, Fla. Mayor David Kaminsky was opposed to naming the park after the Great One, saying: “Jackie Gleason never paid any mind to children in Lauderhill. As a matter of fact, he never paid any mind to Lauderhill at all.” Nonetheless, the City Council voted 3-2 to name a new three-acre park after the late TV star. Residents blocked an earlier proposal to rename Inverrary Drive for Gleason because they thought their postal service would be disrupted.

The latest effort is coming from the L.A. County Board of Supervisors. They just announced a $3 million program in conjunction with some nonprofits groups to test and clean the soil at homes still standing in the areas impacted by the Eaton Fire.
