ARLINGTON, Va. — Friends and relatives of Americans slain in acts of terrorism gathered at Arlington National Cemetery today for a somber tribute on the fourth anniversary of the suicide bombing that killed 241 Marines at their barracks in Beirut.
Navy Secretary James Webb, a former Marine, told the crowd of about 200 that he was in Beirut working as a journalist and left about 10 days before the bombing. “I can remember the morning when I learned of the bomb blast,” Webb told the families. “I wept. I felt an undirected anger--at the terrorists, at my government.”
