The Reagan Administration formally submitted a compromise arms deal to Congress that would allow Saudi Arabia to purchase $1-billion worth of jet fighters and other military hardware. The action had been widely anticipated since Oct. 9, when President Reagan agreed to eliminate Maverick air-to-ground missiles from the weapons package to garner congressional support. The package includes 12 F-15 jet fighters valued at $502 million; conversion kits to upgrade 150 M-60A1 tanks worth $120 million, and conversion kits valued at $375 million to improve the performance and ease of maintenance for F-15 fighters already in the Saudi inventory. Congress now has 30 days to review the controversial deal.
