Sobriety-Check Fugitive Slain After Gun Battle

Associated Press

A man shot two District of Columbia police officers and was killed by police snipers Saturday after a four-hour standoff, authorities said.

They said the man, who was not identified, drove through a sobriety checkpoint, crashed into a light pole about 2 1/2 miles away and fled the car. He took cover in a stairwell and the two officers were wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Police snipers eventually shot and killed him when he ran from his hiding place.
