Gorbachev’s U.S. Visit

This is in response to Valentin Berezhkov’s article “Can New Thinking Put U.S., Soviets on a Smoother Path?” (Op-Ed Page, Nov. 23).

Berezhkov questions if the U.S. can adopt “new ways of thinking” about Soviet-American relations. His article is typical Russian gobbledygook distorting history and suggesting that the U.S. has caused all the problems. He implies that President Harry S. Truman had a “war plan” against Russia, and glibly ignores Stalin’s atrocities, Soviet aggression, etc.

I question if the Russians are capable of new ways of thinking. In particular, will truth ever play a major part in their mentality, or will they continue to suppress it as this article has so conveniently done?
