Closed, but no cigar.

Six months after it shut its doors, Dapplegray Intermediate School in Rolling Hills Estates has been nominated as a “distinguished” school by the state Department of Education.

Year-old test scores were used to select 120 middle-school nominees, from which 60 finalists will be selected in April. When officials learned that Dapplegray had closed, they withdrew it from the competition, but a school district spokeswoman says it was “still fantastic that those students were acknowledged.”
